How I got started

I didn't read much as a youngster, mainly because the assigned school readings didn't capture my interest. However, I vividly remember reading "Old Yeller" in 5th or 6th grade and hating the ending. Things changed when I got ahold of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds." It was different from the movie, and I loved it. That book opened up the world of science fiction to me.

I delved into the genre and became a fan of Isaac Asimov, whose "Foundation Trilogy" quickly became one of my favorites. James P. Hogan's books also left a lasting impression on me, particularly "Thrice Upon a Time" and "Voyage from Yesteryear."

Later, I discovered Tom Clancy, whose military-themed novels resonated with me, given my background. This led me to other authors in the genre, such as Stephen Coonts, Dan Brown, Michael Crichton, Brad Thor, and Orson Scott Card. A couple of years ago, during a family vacation, I picked up a novel by David Baldacci and thoroughly enjoyed his Camel Club series.

I also have a close connection to an author who writes historical fiction. Initially, I didn't think I would enjoy that genre, but her meticulous research and storytelling prowess converted me into a fan. A.L. Sowards, in particular, stands out with her exceptional series on Balkan Legends, which features great action scenes, excellent historical references, and well-developed characters. From tales set in the 1300s to World War II narratives, her books are fantastic reads.
